"At last! A dictionary completely in te reo Maori for children learning in te reo Maori. Te Kete Kupu is designed as a dictionary for young children (years 1-3). The head words are not followed by definitions but by sentences illustrating the different meanings and uses of each word. Brian Gunson's inspired illustrations encourage children to engage with the text.
This long-awaited resource will quickly become a part of the classroom literacy environment. Its purpose is to support literacy and language both for fluent speakers and for learners of te reo Maori. Te Kete Kupu can be used to help with spelling and with placement of tohuto (macrons) and to develop dictionary and research skills.
Children may also simply enjoy the activities and challenges it provides them with. The 304 words and the examples of their use in Te Kete Kupu have been selected from texts in te reo Maori published between 1990 and 2004 for children in junior Maori-medium classes.
