New Zealand has four endemic evergreen species of beech trees: red, silver, and black. These trees grow along the mountain chains of both islands, as well as on the North Island’s Central Plateau. Native birds such as kiwi, kaka, morepork, rifleman and yellowhead, as well as the two species of native bat, regularly make their nests in mature beech trees.
